  Welcome to Year 2

Our Learning this term

Summer 2

Topic: Explorers

This term our topic is all about explorers.  We will be creating a fact file on Neil Armstrong, writing a diary about walking on the moon, writing a recount from the viewpoint of Edmund Hillary and writing a story inspired by the adventures of Captain James Cook.

In maths we will be extending our learning in all areas as we prepare for Year Three. We will also be focusing on children’s reasoning skills, drawing upon what they have learnt this year. There will also be a continued focus on times tables in preparation for our big end of year times tables challenge.

This term is all about consolidation of the Year 2 spelling rules and applying these in our writing. There will be an increased focus on suffixes and using a dictionary to check and correct our own spellings. We will also be looking at homophones and near homophones.

History & Geography

This term in History the children will be learning about three famous explorers; Neil Armstrong, Edmund Hilary and Captain James Cook. We will be making links to geography (maps, continents, oceans) too.

Don't Forget

Every Friday we have a spelling challenge linked to the spelling pattern that we have learnt that week. Please check your child's Home School Diary for any updates at the end of the week.

This term we will also be preparing for the Infant Summer Show. Ladybirds will be doing the acting this time round and Dragonflies will be doing the dance.

Every year we take part in the year 2 Arts festival alongside local schools. This was the song the children learnt for this year's performance.

Burning our houses for The Great Fire of London

We invited Leatherhead fire station in to help us with our Great Fire of London topic. As part of our art for that term we had built our own London houses and recreated our own Great Fire on the playground by burning them.
