Summer Term Week 6 - 01/06/2020

UPDATE - 02-06-2020

A couple of people had problems finding the English activity yesterday. Once you have watched the teaching video, you'll need to click onto the 'Next activity' button on the bottom right hand corner. You should then see this:

If you scroll to the bottom of the page you should then see that on the bottom left hand corner there are some buttons to control the slides. The best way to view these slides is to put them onto full screen. It works in a very similar way to PowerPoint. The questions and activites for the week are on these slides. If you have any other problems accessing the activity, please do not hesitate to contact me on

We hope that you enjoyed the half term and were able to enjoy some of the beautiful weather we have been having.

As part of our plans to support you at home, this week we’ll be complementing our resources with those from Oak National Academy. This online classroom has been created by Year 6 teachers, specifically to support pupils’ learning at home.

You can access Oak’s online classroom on any device, you don’t need to log in or remember a password.  Each lesson is delivered by a trained teacher, over a pre-recorded video, and it’s very clear at the start of each session anything you might need (such as pens, paper etc). The lessons are designed so that you should be able to complete each lesson with little or no adult support.

Setting Description

This week we will be following a unit about how to write a setting description which creates atmosphere. The unit is lead by two teachers, named Mr and Mrs Fozzard, who you will meet in the videos.

Here is an overview of the learning for this week:

Setting description – lesson 1

In this lesson you will be exploring setting descriptions within a text.

You will read an abstract from a story and answer reading comprehension questions about what you have read.

Setting description – lesson 2

Reading focus – In this lesson you will be exploring the text, making inferences and justifying them with evidence.

Setting description – lesson 3

In this lesson you will read a setting description and identify the key features in preparation for writing your own, over the next few sessions.

Setting description – lesson 4

In this lesson you will look at figurative language to describe a setting and create tension

Setting description – lesson 5

In this lesson you will use all your learning from this week to write your own setting description.

For each of the lessons, you will need to follow the link below and scroll down to the third unit of work named Setting Description. Everything that you will need to complete the lesson will be in this section, including the videos and all the activities. The teacher will tell you on the video when you need to stop to complete the activity and once you have completed the activity, you'll need to play the rest of the video and the teacher will go through the answers.

I hope this is clear and that you find it as easy as I did to navigate the Oak Academy website. If you have any problems, please feel free to contact me on and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Below is the link to the Oak Academy website. Use this link each day to access the lessons and resources. I can't wait to see you setting descriptions at the end of the week!

Have a great week,

Mrs Roberts
