Maths at The Greville

Mathematics is one of the most important subjects in the curriculum. Maths is a tool which unlocks a wide range of activities and is essential for adult life. It enhances the ability to think in a systematic and logical way.

At The Greville we deliver the maths curriculum through a Teaching for Mastery (TfM) approach which reveals the structure of mathematical concepts and allows children to apply these to a wide range of problems. In turn, this provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Since the introduction of the TfM Mastery approach in 2022, we have adapted our teaching and learning to follow the new developments and our policies coincide with this. We follow the ‘White Rose’’ scheme in KS1 and KS2 which we adapt to meet the needs of our pupils. In EYFS, we follow the Mastering Number Scheme from the NCETM.

Our Maths lead is a Primary Mastery Specialist with the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the teaching of Mathematics). This role involves supporting maths leads and teachers beyond our school with training and development to ensure they have the right knowledge and skills to deliver high quality maths lessons. This ensures that our staff receive high quality CPD and children's maths lessons have a high impact on outcomes.
